Why We Love This Coffee
This is Marleny and Augusto’s first meaningful harvest of Gesha after four years of patient cultivation. The cup shines with radiant mango, nectarine, and floral clarity, showing both their care and the variety’s elegance.
About the Producer
Marleny Imbachi and her husband, Augusto Ortega, are lifelong coffee producers and founding members of Monkaaba. Together, they have been pillars of the San Agustín coffee community, encouraging fellow growers to pursue autonomy, fair pricing, and lasting relationships with buyers.
Marleny’s path in coffee began in the early 1990s, after a difficult youth as one of nine siblings raised by a single mother. Since then, she and Augusto have dedicated themselves to their farm, La Torre, gradually transitioning from selling anonymously in the local market to producing micro-lots under their own names. Their leadership and commitment have made them a source of wisdom and inspiration across the region.
Gesha in San Agustín
Planted in 2021, this lot represents the first significant harvest of Gesha from La Torre. The variety demands years of care before it reaches maturity — a risky investment for smallholders. But through patience, skill, and nearly four decades of farming experience, Marleny and Augusto have succeeded in cultivating trees that not only yield beautifully but also produce exceptional quality.
This success is evident in the productivity of their Gesha plot: 1,400 trees that produced nearly twice the expected yield, making this both a sizable and sustainable micro-lot. For Marleny and Augusto, it marks a turning point — proof that hard work, resilience, and long-term commitment to specialty coffee can bring real recognition and reward.
