About the Ngoma Ikizere Coffee
The Ngoma Ikizere coffee is a unique offering from Rwanda, representing an extraordinary project led by Emmanuel from Baho Coffee. In 2019, Emmanuel initiated a groundbreaking traceability project, connecting specific communities near his washing stations, an uncommon practice in East Africa. This initiative not only brings transparency to coffee origins but also strengthens community relationships with Baho Coffee, ensuring producers receive recognition and fair compensation for their work.
Ikizere Women’s Coffee is produced by the Ngoma Ikizere group, a community of single mothers—many widowed—navigating a patriarchal society. Founded in 2022, this group has organized itself under a local leadership that coordinates coffee processing activities and social support.
Traditional Processing and Community Building
In a nod to traditional Rwandan methods, the women of Ikizere manually depulp their coffee cherries. This meticulous, labor-intensive process creates a communal space where they connect and support one another through shared challenges, reflecting the values of mutual respect and resilience.
Quality and Commitment
The coffee is processed at the Muzo washing station, where stringent quality controls have resulted in a remarkably high-quality product, despite initial skepticism about manual depulping. The Ikizere lots receive the highest pay rates at farm-gate level, about 50% above the national average, with proceeds helping fund healthcare for the producers.
This coffee represents a commitment to social equality, community recognition, and exceptional quality, making it a standout choice for those who value people, humanity, and ethical practices in coffee.
